The bare root season starts late May when the weather turns cold and lasts for a couple of months. It is best to place orders as early as possible because they often sell out quickly, and planting early in the season gives the plants an opportunity to get established before the spring growing season and before the hot weather starts. The plants are field grown, and in the winter months they are dormant and can easily be dug up and transplanted without any ill effects. The plants remain quite viable even after several weeks out of the ground, as long as the roots are kept covered and not allowed to dry out. Bare rooted plants are easily shipped at much cheaper prices than potted plants via courier. Packed in plastic bags to keep the roots moist, the plants suffer no ill effects from being delivered this way. Plants delivered to the local Melbourne area or picked up from my place are usually packed in foam boxes with the roots covered in soil. Plant as soon as possible after receiving. If you do not intend to plant immediately it's best to leave them covered in the box, or cover the roots with soil or wet rags to keep them moist.. |
